Writer’s suicide prompts outcry from LGBT community in India

Haryana: A writer’s suicide has triggered outrage among the LGBT community here.

The writer, identified as Ashok Singh, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in the city of Haryasuriya on Thursday evening.

He was among more than 200 people killed in the worst spate of violence against the LGBTI community in the country in recent years.

The state government has also sought an inquiry into the killing, with Prime Minister Manohar Lal Khattar expressing “deepest grief” over the death of the writer.

A statement issued by Haryanvi Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said the killing was an attack on the human rights of the community.

A case has been registered under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, the statement said.

In an earlier statement, the state government said it would not tolerate any violence against persons of the LGBT sub-community, which has been the target of attacks and harassment.
